Picking Interior Doors There are many things to consider when choosing the right interior doors for your home. The type of door, what you want the door to represent, amount of sound transfer, and durability of the door are just some options to consider when picking the right door. There are two types of interior doors: flush and panel.
The flush door is a flat wooden surface that is painted usually to blend with the home’s interior. There are hollow flush doors which are usually cheaper, but are less durable and have much sound transfer. It is important to remember that harder wood such as birch handles paint and stain better than softer wood such as mahogany. Flush doors are a low cost, easy way to remodel the doors of a home.
The panel door is a bit more expensive, but is definitely more durable and stands out more than the flush door. Made of solid wood, the panel door is made of horizontal rails and vertical stiles that frame flat or raised wooden panels. These doors sometimes include glass windows. The technique used to make the doors help keep the wood from changing or rotting in different humidity. A medium density fiberboard is sometimes used to make a panel door that is more affordable. The medium density fiberboard usually comes painted and takes finish well. The panel door adds character to the home and really stands out from the rest of the interior.
Door sizes are important to look out. The average interior door is about 1 3/8 inches thick, 24-36 inches wide and stands 6 ft 8 inches tall. If a different size door is wanted expect to pay a premium price. Also, it is important to specify if a pre-hung door is wanted compared to just the door itself. Most people prefer pre-hung doors because they come with hinges mortised into the edges and are mounted into a jamb set. Doors define the interior. They make a statement and identify the feeling of the home. |
